Portable Plants are Processing Pros

Cat tracks instead of wheels makes fat cats out of The Screen Machine. That and the Scalper Series.
“It’s new. Our machines are going from wheels to Caterpillar (Cat) tracks and our customers like it,” said Steve Cohen, president of The Screen Machine in Reynoldsburg, Ohio. “And our top selling portable plants are the Scalper Series.”
The Scalper Series includes four models: the 67C, 67D, 107C, and 107D.
The portable plants are becoming a favorite among quarry operators, contractors and waste-handling companies, noted Cohen.
The 67C is a heavy-duty screen processing plant featuring a 35 hp John Deere Diesel Engine, 7’ long vibratory double deck screen, and a 36” wide conveyor belt. The 67D has a 20-hp engine, 7’ double desk screen and 7” clearance between decks. Both boast hydraulic axle raise and lower, 10K landing gear with Pintel tow, heavy-duty plate construction, 60-gallon hydraulic oil tanks and 38-gallon diesel fuel tanks.
The 107C is a heavy-duty dual screen processor, ideal for construction and demolition debris processing. It features an 80-hp John Deere Diesel, twin 7’ long integrated vibratory double deck screens, independent screens, 60” three-ply folding fines conveyor belt, 130-gallon hydraulic tank, 60 –gallon fuel tank and has an adjustable discharge of up to 15’ in height. The 107D has a 48-hp diesel, 11” clearance between decks, a 60-gallon hydraulic tank, 34-gallon fuel tank and boasts the same grade 80- steel wear plate.
“Customers like the Scalpers because they bypass the hopper. You can drop materials right on the screen,” explained Cohen. “They’re popular with quarries, the soil industry, topsoil companies, landfills, landscapers, and hazardous waste. To be a one-stop shop and screen, that’s our goal.”
The Screen Machine’s portable processing shredder and screening equipment is manufactured by one of the largest manufacturers of portable shredder/screening plants in the industry: Ohio Central Steel Co., with three factories in the central Ohio area.
Plant #1 is the central facility in Columbus where heavy equipment must pass rigorous inspections before final shipping. Plant #2, headquartered in Reynoldsburg, manufactures portable aggregate processing machinery en masse. And Plant #3 in Etna manufactures more mobile mineral mining equipment.
Murrysville Machinery Company markets SCREEN MACHINE products throughout PA, NY, and WV. One of the newer products, THE ACHIEVER TROMMEL Screening Plant makes a beautiful soil product with ease and efficiency. It is an outstanding tool for handling wet soils, which is where most competitors struggle.
Although the Scalper Screening Plant is noted for its ability to bulk process where high production is needed, it’s often sent out on short-term rentals because it’s so easy to move and set up and requires limited operator attention. Wide under-screen conveyors keep production high and material handling costs to a minimum.
Screen Machine isn’t afraid to outfit these plants with large engines, giving the customer the ability to run large stackers and horizontal transfers, both major money-savers. Most portable plants are limited in this capacity, requiring operators to re-handle the product. But Screen Machine provides bigger engines with the power to handle additional capacity.
Roy Leukhardt, owner of Murrysville Machinery Company, says Screen Machine products are rugged and durable. In the past twenty years, he has sold and re-sold the same units over and over as customers move up to bigger equipment or change applications and needs. He believes the longevity of these plants is a tribute to the quality of the product.
Screen Machine’s success is also due in part to their equipment being American-made. The quick availability of parts has helped give them the edge over their competitors.
