Daewoo Merger – Two Major Companies, Two Major Products

by Diana Barnum
Combining marketing power, engineering prowess and industrial machinery experience, Daewoo Machinery Corporation merged with Daewoo Equipment Corporation to form the new $350 million dollar Daewoo Heavy Industries America Corporation (DHIAC).
The principal shareholder is a manufacturing company in South Korea with worldwide revenues of $6 billion, Daewoo Heavy Industries, Ltd. Although DHIAC handles North American sales, service, and technical support of Daewoo machine tools, construction equipment and lift trucks, Skid Steers are a major purchase item on this continent, while excavators are the most popular overseas.
The waste-handling and construction industries are buying Skid Steers at a record pace and Daewoo is getting a large chunk of that business, according to company revenue and sales figures.
“We’ve introduced three new Skid Steers this past year. The 1550 and 2060, both vertical lift booms, came out, and the 1340, replacing the DSL-601,” said Chad Ellis, service manager for DHIAC, noting that the equipments’ specs tell the story:
The 1550XL Skid Steer Loader is a standard 1,500 lbs. with a tipping load of 3,946 lb., operating weight of 6,096 lb. Operating capacity is 1,500 lb. It comes with a 52 hp Daewoo engine, model D427, 3,000 psi hydraulic pressure, and handles maximum travel speed of 6.7 mph. Height-to-bucket pin is 114.8”, dump height at bucket discharge is 87.6” and dump reach at max height is 25.4”. Bucket breakout is 2,910 lb. Arm lifting force is 3,285 lb. The standard pump flow at 16 gpm, optional high flow at 26.7 gpm.
The 2060XL is a standard 2,000 lbs. with a tipping load of 4,338 lb., operating weight of 6,777 lb. Operating capacity is 2000 lb. It comes with a 62 hp Daewoo engine, model D430, 3,000 psi hydraulic pressure, and also handles maximum travel speed of 6.7 mph. Height to bucket pin is 122”, dump height at bucket discharge is 93.6”, and dump reach at max height is 27.3”. Bucket breakout is 3,770 lb. Arm lifting force is 5,194 lb. The standard pump flow at 20.5 gpm, optional high flow at 34.8 gpm.
The 1340 XL is a standard 1,300 lbs. with a tipping load of 2,687 lb., operating weight of 5,412 lb. Operating capacity is 1,300 lb. It comes with a 42 hp Yanmar engine, model 4TNE84, 2,540 psi hydraulic pressure, and handles maximum travel speed of 6.6 mph. Height to bucket pin is 112”, dump height at bucket discharge is 86.3”, and dump reach at max height is 20.4”. Bucket breakout is 2,634 lb. Arm lifting force is 2,890 lb. The standard pump flow at 11.9 gpm, optional high flow at 26.7 gpm.
One other Skid Steer model was popular during the past year, too, the 1760XL.
“We sold five of them to the United Nations (U.N.). We painted them white, put U.N. stickers on them and delivered them to the port in New York to be shipped over seas,” said Ellis.
The 1760XL Loader is a standard 1,700 lbs. with a tipping load of 3,593 lb., operating weight of 6,594 lb. Operating capacity is 1,700 lb. It comes with a 62 hp Daewoo engine, model D430, 3,000 psi hydraulic pressure, and handles maximum travel speed of 6.77mph. Height to bucket pin is 119.1”, dump height at bucket discharge is 91.5”, and dump reach at max height is 22.5”. Arm lifting force is 5,004 lb. The standard pump flow at 20.5 gpm, optional high flow at 34.8 gpm.
Ellis listed key reasons why their clients like these Skid Steers:
• They have a thick and rugged mainframe and boom.
• No hydraulic line is exposed on the boom arms; all are routed inside the boom but easy to access.
• Bucket cylinders are inline with the boom and protected from debris coming over the top of the bucket.
• In-line, direct coupled, hydrostat to engine makes for minimal hp loss and makes all the components easy to reach for service.
• They boast a universal attachment system.
• They have a wide cab with great visibility all around.
• Wide stance and low center of gravity offers increased stability.
• Reliable components are featured: Yanmar, Daewoo, Walvoil, and Saur Sunstrand.
• Rear door allows convenient access to the engine and all routine maintenance items.
• Serviceability is great on all machines; the cab rises by removing two bolts.
• Standard features include: auxiliary hydraulics, working lights, top and rear window.
• Options include: high flow auxiliary, hydraulic self leveling bucket (up only), hand control, hard cab, heater and/or ac, backup alarm, horn, and strobe light.
But for Daewoo’s overseas operations, the excavator is king.
“We sell a ton to other countries. They use excavators where we use dozers. With everything from clearing land to digging,” said Ellis.
Popular wheel excavators include the Solar 170W-v and 200W-v. Top crawler excavator Solar models range from the 130LC-V to the 450-V.
